Updated : 2014-09-26

With one driver in the cab to press the start key, the subway trains operating the ATO (Automatic Train Operation) system can speed up, slow down and park at exact locations along metro Line 1 route stations in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang province, on Sept 16.
The driverless operation enables the train to run faster and be more punctual, as well as saves drivers from fatigue.
The sole operator in the cab helps control starting, operation of doors and handling of emergencies or sudden diversions.
According to Harbin Metro Group, the ATO system was successfully operated on metro Line 1 after a series of debugging, testing and trial work. It received the approval of experts on Aug 21 in safety assessment.
