Civility promotion in the streets

Young volunteers are often seen walking around the streets to publicize volunteer services and call upon the public to actively take part in volunteer services on holidays and weekends.

Harbin, capital city of Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, has carried out a group of experiential activities for young volunteers, such as working as a cleaner or in the traffic police in residential communities. To date, there are more than 10,000 young volunteers in the city and volunteer teams have been set up in 648 communities.

Students from Zhaolin Primary School help passengers cross the road at traffic lights near the school’s entrance during rush hours.

The school’s faculty also joined with their students to pull up a banner that reads "No Chinese style of crossing the road” at the school gate and handed out leaflets to stop jaywalking.

The school has promoted an awareness of traffic safety and helped children develop civil behavior on the road.

A total of 22 children, who work as advisors for community management, have spent winter and summer vacations as well as extracurricular time maintaining the environment and sanitation in Xiangfang district’s Xiangzhong community over the past two years.

They participated in the daily management of the community, which enabled them to make contributions to society and carried forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation through their activities, as well as acting out the volunteer service spirit of devotion, friendship, mutual support and progress.

Cartoon figures in a 60-episode animation film convey civility

How do you vividly explain socialist core values to make a profound influence with young people in a subtle way? A 60-episode animation film came into being for children after several rounds of experimentation. A few lovely cartoon figures were used to integrate the core values into children’s daily study and life in a humorous way.

Every episode carries a theme, such as State affairs, personal accomplishment, civility improvement, low carbon life promotion, social ethics cultivation, personal honesty, family virtues, poverty alleviation and voluntary services.

These episodes use simple stories to tell students about the dos and don’ts and help them establish correct outlook on the world, life and core values.

170-plus cultural centers for children at grassroots level

Last year, Harbin built 176 children’s cultural centers in villages, and the government put in 1.77 million yuan ($288,274) for each center to buy facilities, as well as 10,000 yuan to improve conditions in rural schools.

Harbin students’ morality and civility have continued to improve in various educational activities, and the socialist core values have blended in with education, teaching and management services and take root in their hearts.
