Harbin Electric International Company, a subsidy of China’s leading power equipment producer Harbin Electric Corporation, announced that the new 270 megawatt Minas hydropower station project in Ecuador -- designed and constructed by the company -- was delivered to the owner utility CELEC SUR on June 2, according to a spokesman for Harbin Electric.

He said the handover marked the successful completion of the quality assurance period for the project, one and a half years after operational tests began in October, 2018.

The main generator equipment of the station was designed, manufactured and supplied by Harbin Electric Corporation and other auxiliary system equipment was manufactured and supplied by Chinese manufacturers.

The Minas project has become the first hydropower station in Ecuador to be handed over, among many large-scale hydropower projects currently being undertaken by Chinese-funded enterprises.

The Minas hydropower station is about 90 kilometers away from Cuenca, the third largest city in Ecuador.

As the third largest hydropower station in Ecuador undertaken by Chinese companies, the Minas hydropower station is regarded as one of the most important water projects in the Ecuadorian water system.

Officials said it is expected to improve and optimize Ecuador’s power and energy structure, providing more clean energy and driving local economic development.
