Annual Harbin ice, snow festival kicks off

Tourists admire magnificently colored ice structed illuminated by colorful lights at Harbin Ice and Snow World on Jan 5. The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival opened to the public there on the evening of Jan 5. First held as the Ice Lantern Show in 1985, the event has become one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, the Quebec Winter Carnival in Canada and Norway's Ski Festival. The 36th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival kicked off on Jan 5 and runs to the end of February when the ice starts to melt. [Photo/people.cn]
