The Heilongjiang quarantine authorities have ordered stricter inspections at Harbin Taiping International Airport in a solid effort to prevent the deadly Ebola virus from entering China.

Recently, a new wave of the Ebola virus broke out in West Africa, drawing a great deal of concern for China’s authorities.

Although there is no direct flight between Harbin Taiping Airport and West Africa, some Southeast Asia airports in places such as Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan frequently exchange flights with West Africa and Harbin Airport. The Ebola virus can gain entry to China in this manner.

Under these circumstances, local sanitary authorities have stepped up stricter measures to prevent and control the spread of the Ebola virus. Medical staff at Harbin Airport are trained to test body temperatures and keep records. Once someone is found with symptoms of Ebola, he or she will undergo key inspections.

Some symptoms cannot be diagnosed immediately and will be handed to the assigned medical authority. Once suspicious cases are found, they will be reported to the airport's emergency team as soon as possible.

The Ebola virus is an acute hemorrhagic infectious disease. One can get infected through interaction with a victim's blood or body fluid through skin, the respiratory tract, or conjunctiva. It has an incubation period lasting anywhere between 2 to 21 days.

Its clinical symptoms include abrupt morbidity, fever, extreme weakness, headaches, myodynia, pharyngalgia and conjunctival injection.

Several days after infection, severe symptoms such as vomiting, stomachaches, diarrhea or erythra will occur.

The virus has killed almost 1,000 people since March this year, originating from the Guinean outbreak. More than 20 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East have reported definite cases of Ebola.
