Students stood out from 961 teams from Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces competed at the semifinal of Solve For Tomorrow — 2014 China Youth Science Popularization Innovative Experiment and Work Competition at Heilongjiang Science and Technology Museum in Harbin on Oct 18.
The competition was jointly hosted by the Science Popularization Department of the China Association for Science and Technology and the Central School Department of the China Communist Youth League. It was exclusively sponsored by Samsung Electronics and promoted by Hudong.com, the largest Chinese encyclopedia website.
Multiple hi-tech technologies in space flight, military or modern agricultural areas attracted great attention in the competition. For example, one highly-efficient and energy-conserving irrigation device can save 30 percent energy compared with the present irrigation methods. A cloud-based PM2.5 monitoring, processing and forecasting system can prevent the haze problem in an innovative way. The new space solar energy station system can be used for space exploration, and the USB flash disk encryption system based on face recognition and GPS technology helps to protect private information.
Themed “Energy Conservation, Environmental Protection and Healthy Life,” the competition aims to encourage students to solve current problems of energy exhaustion and harsh ecological environment within the spheres of sustainable development.
The competitors were mainly from engineering colleges, including Harbin Engineering University, Harbin University of Science and Technology, and Dalian University of Technology. Experts spoke highly of these students’ works, covering hi-tech fields including the military, space flight, and modern agriculture.
After fierce competition, 12 teams in the Experiment and Originality of Science Popularization unit qualified to compete with competitors from the Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu divisions in Beijing on Nov 20.
Li Tingzhu, general manager of the sales department of Samsung Electronics in Northeast China, and Ou Jiancheng and Zhang Chenggui, deputy curator and curator of China Science Technology Museum, respectively, awarded the winners with honor certificates and Samsung plasma air purifiers.
