Harbin double-checking dangerous chemical sites after Tianjin blast

The city of Harbin, Heilongjiang province recently announced a special work safety campaign for hazardous chemicals stored in the city, in view of the warehouse blast in the city of Tianjin on August 12, Heilongjiang Daily reported on Aug 20, saying that the city’s safety watchdog will work with the fire department to do a thorough inspection of all the enterprises and densely populated areas.
The areas getting the most attention will be dangerous chemical-related production processes, storage tank yards, warehouses, and hazardous materials business sites, with the focus mainly on the qualifications of both companies and employees.
The city says there will be zero tolerance of any violations related to work safety. They will take further steps to improve management of hazardous chemicals and are urging all administrative offices and officials to get tough.
The Tianjin disaster happened at night on August 12, when two explosions ripped through a warehouse that held hundreds of tons of toxic chemicals, including roughly 700 tons of sodium cyanide. The death toll from the accident has risen to 114, and it left hundreds of people in hospital.
