For this year’s Harbin Ice and Snow World in the city of Harbin, Heilongjiang province, which opened on Jan 5, a group of five folk artists have been invited to show their special cultural heritage work that reflects the wintery scenery of the Northeast and local culture.

Zhang Lin, a member of the Hezhe ethnic group, has her fish-skin painting skills, while Zhou Yaowen is a master of clay figurines, Yang Fuchang is a sculptor, Qu Yinghong, from Fangzheng county, specializes in paper-cuts, and Wang Yigang, is an agate carver.harbind.jpg

Qu’s 1.8-meter-long paper-cut has gotten a lot of attention since it depicts a famous painting of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) “City Life” (Qingming Shanghetu).

Qu says she brought only the best of her works, especially a 10-meter paper-cut that took her and more than three months to finish, with five helpers, then added,“I create paper-cuts and inherit [the tradition] and I’m glad to have the opportunity to present this traditional Chinese art to people from abroad.”

The organizer says that these five artists’ work is on sale in a Ice and Snow World souvenir shop.
