NE China customs agents targeting smugglers

Customs officers in the city of Harbin, Heilongjiang province cracked down on the smuggling of agricultural products, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, guns, and rare animals and plants in 2015, having handled 12 cases involving drugs and other items estimated at 4.1-million an ($632,300) in value.

The intensified law enforcement working with regional government departments nabbed 22 suspects and transferred 11 cases to procurators and sent seven people were sentenced by the courts.

There were investigations of 289 cases, involving goods worth 65 million yuan and 2.88 million yuan worth of illegal earnings confiscated and tax evasion valued at more than 76 million yuan.

This year, customs officers are focusing on gangs of smugglers and the smuggling of grain and frozen foods, integrated circuitry, refined oil products, tobacco and luxury goods. They will also work with the local tax bureau and public security to crack down on the false reporting of exports to obtain a tax rebate.
