The city of Harbin, Heilongjiang province has announced that an old tram line will reappear in by the end of 2017, according to Harbin Daily, which notes that the 14-km-long line will be built in the South Harbin Industrial City, an important part of the city’s Economic and Technological Development Zone.
Construction work on the line, a part of the city’s subway Line 1 with a total of 15 stops, will begin in the second half of this year at a cost of 1-billion-yuan ($153.61 million), and is expected to improve transportation in the area.
Authorities say the project involves a public-private partnership (PPP) model, to lower financial risks and financing difficulties. The city had trams running in the downtown area previously but they ceased operations in 2006.
The site of the tram, the Economic and Technological Development Zone. is home to more than 8,000 companies, including 28 members of the Fortune 500.
