The city of Harbin has begun closing some of its roads because of construction work on its subway project as of May 4, Heilongjiang Daily reports on May 6, noting that this is not the first time for traffic to halt for the subway this year.

In early April, some routes were closed and new routes planned and, thanks to that move, traffic jams have been kept to a minimum so the road closure don’t affect people’s lives a lot. When asked about the inconvenience, one woman, named Zhang, said that the temporary closure of a bus stop near her home didn’t cause her much trouble in her daily life and, in any case, the subway station under construction will make travel easier, which in fact got her excited.

There will be a transfer station for Lines 2 and 3 at the intersection of Jingwei St and Shangzhi St in the Daoli district, where one of the workers explained that it take a lot of work and that the underground engineering and public utilities are a tough job because it’s in an area with a complicated network of power and communication cables and water, drainage and gas pipes.

He said that the departments managing these facilities are making every effort to finish their work by next month and the local government has summoned departments involved with pipelines and urban landscape along the metro lines to discuss their progress.

Construction work on 33 subway stations and 10 vertical shafts is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, the city says.
