A Californian sea lion gave birth to a cub at Harbin’s Polarland park on Aug 22, the first time such a sea lion has successfully given birth on the Chinese mainland.
“De Bei” the mother sea lion is 16 years old and has been at the park in Heilongjiang province since 2005. It is the first time that she has given birth.
The number of Californian sea lions in captivity in China is low, and therefore breeding is an extremely rare occurrence, and representative of a step forward into the research of these sea mammals.
In 2014, an Antarctic penguin was born at the park, which was also the first of its kind to be born in China.
