To mark Green Commuting Day in China on Sept 22, Harbin government recently urged residents opt for public transport to ease congestion and improve the environment.
Previously known as China Car Free Day, the initiative is organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and is themed on “green transportation and intelligent travel” this year.
People in the city are encouraged to choose public transportation and walk or ride their bike whenever possible on the day. The aim is to raise awareness of environmental issues, reduce pollution and save money.
According to national government statistics, economic benefits to the tune of four yuan will be reaped for every yuan invested in public transportation. The per capita energy consumption for public vehicles is 8.4 percent less than that of private cars. Public transportation vehicles also take up an average of ten percent less than private vehicles when carrying the same amount of passengers, according to the statistics.
During Green Commuting Day, service cars and private cars belonging to the government and private enterprises will be banned from using roads. Citizens are advised to choose public transportation to create a better transportation environment.
