As a main pepper production region of China, Heilongjiang is famous for its pepper quality.
Many kinds of pepper are now sold to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and some of them have been exported to Russia and South Korea.
In recent years, Heilongjiang has achieved a pepper planting area of about 27,000 to 33,000 hectares. A total of 0.8 million to 1.5 million tons of peppers are produced in Harbin, Mutankiang and Kiamusze, in Heilongjiang province. There are more than 20 categories of pepper in Heilongjiang, including color pepper and pimento.
Researchers in recent years have investigated the production of peppers in South China and know there is high demand for the products. They have developed many new breeds of peppers, including "Heilongjiang pepper No 13”, which is popular among people living in South China.
Other breeds include “Heilongjiang pepper No 11”, which has been exported to Russia, and “Heilongjiang pepper No 15”, which has been processed and exported to South Korea.
Another new type of cow-horn pepper has just been developed, and perhaps will be named “Heilongjiang pepper No 16”, according to a researcher from the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
