January 19 marks the third anniversary of the opening of the popular Ahn Jung Geun memorial in Harbin, Heilongjiang province.
The memorial, which honors Ahn Jung Geun, a Korean patriot who killed a senior Japanese official over a century ago, has attracted 300,000 visitors from China and abroad since it opened in 2014.
In the memorial’s early days it mostly attracted tourists from Korea.
However, with publicity from the media, more and more people visited the site, including people attending the Harbin Cold Region Exposition and the Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival.
The memorial, which is located at Harbin Railway Station, will be moved temporarily to Harbin Art Museum for Korean Ethnics while construction work is being done at the station. It will be returned when the work is completed in 2020.
Ahn Jung Geun shot dead Hirobumi Ito, who had served as prime minister of Japan four times before becoming resident-general of Korea in 1905, at Harbin railway station on Oct 26, 1909.
