With people in Harbin currently busy with spring plowing, reporters from Harbin Daily recently visited Bayan county to tour the Yimashan fruit and vegetable farm.
“We are now planting early-maturing grapes, and it will be time to harvest as early as August,” said Liu Xiuyan, a farmer in Bayan county.
According to Liu, the Yimashan farm covers an area of 300 mu, which includes more than 80 greenhouses for growing grapes, muskmelons, strawberries and tomatoes. An additional eight greenhouses were built last year.
Additional categories of fruit have been recently been planted in Bayan county, including blueberries, raspberries and persimmons. It is expected that revenues will be increased again this year.
Liu currently lives in Xiji town, an organic vegetable planting base in Bayan county. Xiji town currently has a total of 8,000 mu (533 hectares) of fields being planted with vegetables, providing a yield of approximately 20,000 yuan ($2,898) in revenue this year.
In recent years, the structural adjustment of local agriculture has been an important job in Bayan county. This year’s growing area for vegetables has reached a total of 60,000 mu, creating farming opportunities for 1,200 households.
