The 16th “Harbin Bank Cup” hiking contest was held in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province on May 28, attracting more than 30,000 people who each hiked for 20 kilometers.
This year’s event is themed on “Five City Linkage”, namely the cities of Shenyang, Changchun, Tianjin, Dalian and Harbin. It aims to spread the influence of the event throughout the whole country and attract visitors to Harbin during the summer.
First held in 2003, this event has since attracted a total of more than 400,000 participants. World Walking Association has awarded it the title of “representative event”.
The event advocates healthy living, environmental protection and fashion. With no sanitation workers or garbage removal vehicles on the road, participants consciously protected the environment during the contest by not dropping litter.
With increasing numbers of young participants attending the event, the contest has enjoyed a higher profile in recent years.
