Water levels in the downtown Harbin section of Songhua River began rising June 2 as a result of increased runoff upstream.

In 24 hours, from June 2 to 3, the water level increased by 15 centimeters, pushing the backed-up water level above 114 meters. According to a Harbin hydrologist, the trend for rising water levels will continue for a few days before a gradual drop.

The water level fell to 113.55 meters May 29, the lowest level recorded in 11 years, resulting in the exposure of the riverbed in some shallow areas. Low water levels also caused the death of organisms in the river and stranded numerous boats.
