Around 260,000 households living in the 233 residential communities of Harbin are to get access to refuse-sorting facilities, accounting for 18 percent of the households living in the urban area of the city.

The initiative was undertaken by the Harbin Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau, responding to a call made by China’s environmental protection authority for an improvement in sorting the nation’s household garbage.

In line with the classification requirements for domestic garbage, Harbin has installed 10,989 garbage cans for recyclables, hazardous waste, kitchen waste and other wastes, and 29 recyclable sorting rooms in its nine urban districts.

Currently, some 40 vehicles for kitchen waste transportation and 24 vehicles for hazardous garbage transportation are in full operation, meeting the basic needs of the city, according to officials.

In the future, a kitchen waste treatment plant will be built in Songbei district; and by 2022, the daily processing capacity of kitchen waste in Harbin will reach 1,000 tons.
