In response to a call by China’s environmental protection authority to improve the sorting of household garbage, the northeastern city of Harbin has sped up the establishment of garbage collection stations in its urban areas.
The first intelligent garbage-sorting bins in Pingfang district, Harbin were put into use in the Heping residential community on June 11. The bins collect waste paper, plastic, metal, glass, and other types of garbage from residents.
As a reward for their eco-friendly behavior, the smart garbage-sorting bins offer points to residents who use them. The points can be exchanged for daily necessities such as cups of soap and water at designated service stations.
There are currently 13 sanitation workers in the Heping residential community, with two responsible for garbage sorting.
The new garbage-sorting equipment is expected to help save on costs and labor.
