The Harbin Taiping International Airport experienced a spike in traffic during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which lasted from Sept 13 to 15.

Statistics released by the airport reveal that it handled 1,151 flights and 151,000 passengers over a three-day period.

Staff at the airport said that domestic cities -- including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Qingdao and Yantai , as well as international cities such as Seoul, Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka -- are the top travel destinations for Harbin residents. The passenger attendance rate was 85 percent.

Incoming flights were mainly from Beijing, Qingdao, Yantai and Hangzhou, with the passenger attendance rate reaching 90 percent.

The number of passengers in and out of the airport peaked on Sept 15. And the only day the total reached 53,000.

To cope with the large number of passengers, Harbin airport opened extra security check channels, check-in counters and expedited green channels for children, the elderly and pregnant women to shorten waiting times.
