Harbin, capital city of northern Heilongjiang province, is taking stringent measures to safeguard the healthcare of its residents amid the ongoing outbreak of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus strain, local officials said.

The city has already established an expert group for pneumonia prevention, control and treatment, they added.

It has strengthened professional training of healthcare workers, so they are able to grasp the technical specifications and work requirements according to the pneumonia prevention and control plan and the diagnosis and treatment plan recently issued by the China National Health Commission.

The disease control agencies at the municipal level and district level have arranged specialized personnel to monitor the epidemic network closely around the clock, in a bid to strengthen active surveillance of influenza-like symptoms and unexplained pneumonia cases.

The city’s health commission has also conducted comprehensive law enforcement inspections of all Harbin’s medical agencies on reports of any infectious disease outbreaks, as well as on disease pre-screening and triages, fever clinics, supplies of emergency reserves and hospital infection controls.

Heilongjiang Health and Health Commission announced that the first case of the pneumonia in Heilongjiang province was confirmed on Jan 22. 

The patient was a 69-year-old male from Mudanjiang city in Heilongjiang. 

Hospital officials said that at present, the patient is seriously ill and undergoing treatment in isolation at the Second Mudanjiang Municipal Hospital.

Officials said that as of the noon of Jan 23, no such pneumonia case was reported or confirmed in Harbin city .

Information on the 72 medical institutions in Harbin that have set up fever clinics was released by the Harbin health commission on Jan 22.
