The second phase of the expansion of Harbin Taiping International Airport – in the capital of China’s northernmost Heilongjiang province – will soon get the green light from the National Development and Reform Commission, according to information released by China Airport Construction Group Corporation.

Under the expansion plans, the airport will be able to handle 285,000 flights annually and annual passenger throughput of 38 million, with cargo and mail throughput of 300,000 metric tons.

A new runway in the east of the airport will be built, adding to existing runways.

Meanwhile, the construction will include 90 parking bays and support facilities for navigation, cargo storage, fire rescues, fuel and power supplies.

Officials said that after the expansion project is completed, it will greatly improve and enhance the capacity of Harbin airport, to better serve the vast number of passengers and serve local economic development.

In 2019, Harbin airport recorded throughput of 20.78 million passengers, ranking it first among the four largest airports in Northeast China for the fourth consecutive years.

That exceeded its design target of handing 18 million passengers in a year, officials said.
