Founded in 1900, Harbin Brewery - originally called Ulubulevskij Brewery -was the earliest brewery in China.
Its founder was a Russian businessman named Ulubulevskij, who was among the large number of foreign immigrants who came to Harbin to work on the Trans-Manchurian Railway Project. . Smaller breweries were later established in the city by Czechsand Germans. In its earlier years, the annual output of Ulubulevskij Brewery was 300 tons.
In 1932, it came under the joint control of a Czech citizen and a Chinese citizen named Li Zhuchen, and was renamed Harbin Brewery. Its annual production capacity reached 1,200 tons and its trademark was in Russian. Most of its beer was kept in casks and there was not much bottled beer. In addition, it was not of high quality and was not easy to preserve.
The beer was mainly sold to foreigners in the towns along the Trans-Manchurian Railway Project and to local Chinese in Harbin.
Today, it is one of the leading breweries in China and has become one of the top 500 companies in the country in terms of benefits for its employees.
