Zhang has accumulated considerable experience of TCM, both in his academic life and through practicing TCM. He has self-developed many TCM prescriptions based on his clinical experiences.

"I am a pragmatist and don't advocate writing too many books, I think practice is the most important thing," Zhang said.

In 1989, he developed a special TCM prescription which can alleviate depression. The drug which is called Ningshenlin and is made of different Chinese herbs, obtained the silver award at a Eureka World Invention Exposition in Brussels. Nowadays, Ningshenlin is widely prescribed.

On Nov 11, 2009, the H1N1 influenza outbreak hit a college in Heilongjiang. Zhang established a TCM emergency team and developed a prescription which can help alleviate the symptoms of influenza.
